Who Says Bartering is Dead?

Crochet Hooded Scarf

So I might have pulled off the feat of a lifetime!  I've brought back bartering!  You remember from grade school learning about this old trade:  a system of exchange for goods or services without using a medium of exchange, like money (so says Wiki).  Since I had my hand surgery on November 25, I've been on disability for the past month, and hence have not had my regular income. However, hair doesn't stop growing because disability income stinks!  My hair desperately needed to be highlighted and trimmed!  What's a girl to do?  Barter you said?  That's exactly what I did!

My friend (and neighbor) Kristin happens to be an amazing cosmetologist (hair stylist) who absolutely loves anything that I crochet (at least I think).  So, I asked her if she would be willing to do my hair in exchange for a hooded scarf (an item I crocheted awhile back that she has been eying ever since I finished it!). And she said yes!

And, there you have it.  We bartered.  I got what I wanted, and she got what she wanted.  My hair looks amazing (thanks Kristin!), and she absolutely loves her hooded scarf.

Free Crochet Hooded Scarf Pattern

What You'll Need:
Yarn:
3 balls Sensations Angel Hair #650 "TAN"
1  ball Sensations Angel hair #4323  "WHITE"
1  ball Lion Brand's Tweed Stripes #204  "MIXED"
Size H Hook
Needle (for weaving in the ends)
Scissors

Stitches Used:
SC (single crochet)
DC (double crochet)
HDC (half double crochet)
FPDC (front-post double crochet)
HDC2TOG (half double crochet two together)

Scarf Here's How:
You'll crochet the full length of the scarf first before crocheting the hood.  The sizes below are for 5'7ish female adult (Kristin). You may adjust as necessary.  Read the pattern first to get a feel for the flow, then you can gauge and change stitch amounts depending on how big/small you want it before starting.

Secondly, there are a couple of directions that say to use the whole ball of yarn.  Because I was making this pattern up while crocheting, I didn't exactly count some of the rounds where I used the entire ball of yarn.  It is noted, and as you follow the pattern, you'll understand what I'm talking about.
With WHITE:

Ch23  (this makes the width of the scarf.  You may chain less if                 you want a thinner scarf)
Rnd1)   Ch2, turn, DC in 2nd ch from hook, DC across (23)
Rnd2)  Ch2, turn, HDC across (23)
Rnd3-8)  Repeat Rnd2

JOIN MIXED:

Rnd9)  Ch1, turn, SC across (23)
Rnd10) Ch2, turn, DC across (23)
Rnd11)  Ch2, turn, DC across (23)

Rnd14)  Ch2, turn, DC across (23)
Rnd15)  Ch1, turn, SC across (23)
Rnd16)  Ch2, turn, DC across (23)
Rnd17)  Ch2, turn, DC across (23)

JOIN TAN:

Rnd19)  Ch1, turn, SC across (23)
Rnd20) Ch2, turn, HDC across (23)
Rnd21)  Ch2, turn, 10HDC, 3FPHDC, HDC in remaining 10 ch (23)
Rnd22-?)  Repeat Rnd21 until all TAN yarn is used (23)  **this is where you finish one whole ball of tan yarn, but make sure to finish the whole round; if you don't have enough to complete a round, finish one round before so you aren't stopping in the middle of a round**

JOIN WHITE:  (I am going to start with calling the next Rnd "Rnd50" because your Rnd count may differ according to yarn used or crochet style)

When finished using the whole ball of tan yarn, join white:

Rnd50)  Ch1, turn, SC across (23)
Rnd51)  Ch2, turn, DC across (23)
Rnd52)  Ch2, turn, DC across (23)

Rnd55)  Ch2, turn, DC across (23)
Rnd56)  Ch2, turn, DC across (23)
Rnd57)  Ch1, turn, SC across (23)
Rnd58-?) Repeat Rnd54-Rnd57 until this portion fits comfortably around the neck, shoulder to shoulder.  This is the portion that you will attach the hood to, so look in the mirror to make sure it fits well)

JOIN WHITE:  (I am going to start with calling the next Rnd "Rnd90" because your Rnd count may differ according to yarn used or crochet style or neck size)

Rnd90)  Ch1, turn, SC across (23)
Rnd91)  Ch2, turn, DC across (23)

**And by the way, sorry I've been absent for almost a whole month.  If you have kept up with my blogs, you'll remember that I had my hand surgery on November 25.  Medically-speaking, I had De Quervain's Tendinosis (just google it), but it caused my right thumb to be in extreme pain with extension; therefore making it very difficult to do anything!  The surgery has slowly improved my range of motion and pain level.  I'm still healing, and hope to be back to regular blogging soon!
